HR Academy
HR Academy is a new required training curriculum designed to provide a foundational understanding of key HR principles and practices for HR professionals at NC State University. The evolution of HR Academy has been a collaboration of current HR Professionals from across campus at all levels and reflects our ongoing commitment to professional development and our One HR philosophy.
HR Academy is REQUIRED for all new HR Professionals hired on or after July 1, 2025 and must be completed in their first 90 days (or from the Academy launch date, Aug. 19, 2025). - Flexible Delivery: The majority of the courses will be available virtually and on-demand, ranging from approximately 20 to 90 minutes to complete, offering flexibility for busy schedules.
Please note: The Employee Relations (ER) training will initially remain a live course. - Reinvented Based on Feedback: HR Academy has been thoughtfully reinvented based on feedback and requests from the HR professionals community, ensuring its relevance and impact.
- SME Ongoing Commitment: Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) will have an ongoing, though diminishing, time commitment to manage and update course content and transition it to various delivery methods. Phase 1 involves recorded Zoom sessions, with a transition to e-learning modules (Phase 2) and other options in between, allowing for content updates without full course overhauls.
- Introductory and Fundamental: It’s important to understand that HR Academy is introductory and fundamental in nature. It is not intended to be a comprehensive training program. Additional courses and training opportunities will be available to address specific roles and responsibilities.
- Updated Content: All course content has been developed or updated in 2025 in preparation for the launch in August. Prior open enrollment courses must be taken anew through the HR Academy to ensure everyone benefits from the latest information. The content will be progressively converted to a consistent e-course format over time.
- Applicable to Internal Transfers: This requirement also applies to internal employees transitioning into an HR role for the first time.
- Refresher Opportunity: HR Academy is also open to existing employees who wish to refresh their knowledge or gain a broader understanding of foundational HR topics.
- Based on Current HR Listing: The initial rollout and tracking of required participants will be based on the current list of HR Professionals maintained by UHR Administration.

This course provides HR employees with a clear overview of the HRNow Employee Center portal and the resources available to support them.
Intro to HR at NC State (On-Demand)
This course provides new HR professionals with a comprehensive understanding of the structure, roles, and responsibilities within HR at NC State, including distinctions between various HR units, key state agencies, essential communications, and the broader impact of HR across the University and state.
Performance Management at NC State: An Introductory Course for HR Professionals (On-Demand)
This course serves as an essential guide for new HR professionals at NC State University to understand performance management here at the university. Participants will learn the foundational principles of performance management, including goal setting, monitoring progress, and conducting performance evaluations. Participants will be introduced to the Wolfpack Performance Program (WPP). By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively participate as a manager or employee in the performance program at NC State, helping to build a motivated, engaged, and high-performing workforce.

Employee Relations at NC State: An Introductory Overview for HR Professionals (Instructor-led)
This course is designed to give new HR Professionals at North Carolina State University a basic understanding of the Employee Relations (ER) function. This introductory course provides a foundational overview of ER at NC State, offering information and essential knowledge to help you comprehend workplace dynamics. Through this course, you will explore the core responsibilities of HR professionals in ER, understand a few key differences in employee classifications, and learn key partners of the ER team.
Fundamentals of Equal Opportunity (Instructor-led)
This course is intended to provide participants with a fundamental understanding of equal opportunity and affirmative action laws and policies. The session will outline relevant laws such as Title VII, Title IX, and the ADA, including the groups protected by each, and it will touch on corresponding institutional policies. Participants will learn how to identify discrimination, harassment, and retaliation, will be exposed to examples of how prohibited conduct may appear in a professional or academic environment, and will highlight relevant case law on these topics. This course also includes a brief explanation of how affirmative action works in both the employment and academic contexts.
I-9 & E-Verify (On-Demand)
This course provides new HR professionals with a comprehensive overview of Form I-9 and E-Verify requirements, including completion deadlines, acceptable documentation, international employment considerations, and the importance of maintaining compliance to avoid federal penalties.
Navigating PeopleSoft HR: Common Navigations (On-Demand)
An introductory course to the most commonly used aspects of the PeopleSoft System as an HR professional.

This course explains the key functions of the onboarding center, what services are offered, and who receives these services. Important tips and resources are shared for departments to use in welcoming new employees to NC State.

This course provides new HR professionals with a broad overview of various HR systems used at NC State with emphasis on the PeopleAdmin and PeopleSoft systems.

Recruitment and Selection (Instructor-led)
This course is designed for hiring managers and HR partners seeking to refine their recruitment and selection skills to attract, evaluate, and secure top talent. Participants will explore the entire recruitment lifecycle, from identifying hiring needs and developing clear, inclusive job postings to conducting structured interviews and creating a positive candidate experience. Through practical strategies and best practices, this course empowers managers to make informed, fair, and defensible hiring decisions that align with organizational goals. This course will refer to the online applicant tracking system, PeopleAdmin, but will not include in-depth training on the system. This course provides a general overview of HR in higher education, along with academic HR guidelines and practices at NC State.
Additional Compensation 101 (On-Demand)
In this course, the core aspects of the Additional Compensation Regulation will be explored. Participants will learn what defines additional compensation, when additional compensation is appropriate, who qualifies to receive it and how to begin the process.
De-escalation Strategies (Instructor-led)
Tense or escalated situations can arise suddenly with students, colleagues, and even personal acquaintances. It is important to know how to respond safely and compassionately without further escalating these situations. Participants will learn about active listening and other specific strategies to effectively respond to and de-escalate tense situations. Attendees will also learn about the NC State’s Behavior Assessment Team and response process when concerning behavior is shared. This training is designed for university community members to learn basic de-escalation strategies and how the University responds to concerns.
J-1 Application for New Exchange Visitor: Departmental Training (On-Demand)
OIS has implemented a new online form submission program- GlobalHome! GlobalHome provides a variety of online services for our NC State international students, scholars, and employees — as well as the staff that support them. OIS is transitioning all student and department requests to GlobalHome. This training will guide you through how to request access to GlobalHome, as well as how to submit an initial J-1 DS-2019 request in GlobalHome. Departmental users will be required to complete this training prior to being able to request access to GlobalHome. **Please note this specific training is only for staff (payreps, HR personnel, etc.) who submit the DS-2019 requests to OIS. Faculty and other staff who do not submit DS-2019 requests should not attend this training.
PeopleAdmin 7- Basic (HR-LOD24) (Instructor-led)
This course is designed for supervisors, managers, and human resources representatives who are responsible for writing and managing job descriptions and how that relates to compliance and compensation. REPORTER detailed description: This training is specifically designed for new or infrequent users of PeopleAdmin7 with any user access type (i.e., Initiator, Approver, AA/Fiscal Officer, etc.). You must have PeopleAdmin7 access prior to taking this course.
This is the fundamental class for users of PeopleAdmin7 that will provide you with an overview of the system interface. This course will provide an overview of the modules, workflows, forms, and functionality of the system.
Navigating PeopleSoft HR: Job Action Requests (JAR) for Non-Permanent Appointments (On-Demand)
This course will equip you with the knowledge and skills to successfully manage both paid and unpaid temporary appointments.

Navigating PeopleSoft HR: Manage Job (On-Demand)
Manage Job stores job records for all employees, regardless of their employment classification. In this course, you’ll learn how to navigate the Manage Job tile and apply best practices for maintaining employee job records.
Onbase (On-Demand)
This course gives insights into OnBase, an enterprise content management system that houses NC State’s employee records for permanent employees, including both active and separated.
Timekeeping & Pay Essentials (On-Demand)
This course covers the fundamental importance of accurate timekeeping and provides an overview of the timekeeping system, WolfTime, used at NC State. We’ll also cover the important tax forms you have access to and the impact of pay deductions.
Elective Courses can be selected from the remaining Core Courses after the initial four are chosen, in combination with any of the seven electives listed above.

Can anyone enroll for the HR Academy?
HR Academy is designed by HR Professionals for HR Professionals.
Completion of the HR Academy is mandatory for all HR professionals hired into positions at NC State University on or after July 1, 2025. This requirement applies to all levels, from entry-level to Assistant Deans, and includes internal employees transitioning into an HR role for the first time. New HR professionals are expected to complete the Academy within their first 90 days of employment in their HR role or from the launch date of the Academy (August 19, 2025).
What is the structure of the HR Academy curriculum?
The HR Academy consists of approximately 16 core courses and 10 elective courses. To complete the Academy, participants must take a total of 11 courses: seven core courses and four electives. Three of the seven core courses are pre-selected, while employees will choose four additional core courses and four elective courses.
Can an HR professional who was hired prior to July 1, 2025 and has been in an HR Professional role with NC State longer than 3 months enroll for a single course(s) as a refresher?
Yes, while the HR Academy is required for new HR professionals, existing employees are strongly encouraged to explore the course offerings. Any of the core or elective courses can be taken individually as a refresher or to gain a broader understanding of foundational HR topics, without the requirement to complete the full Academy. This provides flexibility for ongoing professional development.
If an HR professional who has been in this role with NC State longer than 3 months elects to complete the entire certification HR Academy, must they do so in 90 days?
No. An HR Professional that has been with NC State longer than 3 months that was hired prior to July 1, 2025 can enroll for the full HR Academy and will have 12 months from the time of registration to complete the full Academy (11 courses).
What is the role of supervisors in the HR Academy?
HR supervisors play a crucial role in the HR Academy. They are expected to help their new hires identify the preferred core courses and choose elective courses that align with the specific needs of their team and office. Supervisors are also encouraged to consider how to incorporate the HR Academy into their onboarding and performance management plans for HR-focused employees.
How was the HR Academy developed and how will it be maintained?
The HR Academy was developed through a collaborative effort involving a project team and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) from UHR and various campus units. The development process included identifying immediate topics, building content and delivery frameworks, and conducting prototype classes for review and evaluation. The project is an Office of Finance and Administration goal for 2024-25. There is an ongoing commitment from SMEs to manage and update course content, with plans for a phased transition to e-learning modules to allow for content updates without full course overhauls. A course maintenance plan will be established to address potential updates to systems and processes.
