Plan Update
The NC State MetLife Legal Plan ended on December 31, 2025. Effective January 1, 2026, a new and more robust MetLife Legal Plan will be administered by the UNC System Office and available to employees across all UNC institutions.
Employees enrolled in the NC State MetLife Legal Plan in 2025 were automatically enrolled in the new UNC System MetLife Legal Plan for 2026 unless they chose to cancel coverage during Annual Enrollment.
The UNC System offers eligible employees a low-cost legal service through MetLife Legal Plans. Employees who pay for this program have access to a wide array of legal services to meet personal and family needs. Services and referrals are available through a network of providers at affordable costs. See below for plan information, or visit the MetLife Legal Plan website for complete details.
Eligibility
Faculty and staff (non-temp) who work 20 hours per week (.5 FTE) or greater, for nine or more months per year on a recurring basis, are eligible to participate in MetLife Legal Plans. Eligible dependents and legal spouses are also covered.
Effective Dates of Coverage
New employees are eligible to enroll within the first 30 days of employment. The new UNC System plan will be available for election in the My UNC & NC Flex Benefits enrollment portal via MyPack Portal.
After the initial 30-day eligibility window, employees may start or cancel coverage at any time during the year or during Annual Enrollment.
To make changes: Call the Empyrean University Benefits Service Center at 833-862-1490 Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Start of Coverage
Coverage becomes effective the first day of the month following a new employee’s hire date.
End of Coverage
Coverage will end on the last day of the month in which your employment ends. For example, if your last day of work is March 20, your coverage would end on March 31.
Any covered participant who leaves NC State employment may continue with the MetLife Legal Plan through a direct-pay option. Learn more about continuation options upon separation.

Enrollment is completed in the My UNC & NC Flex Benefits portal via MyPack Portal or by calling the Empyrean University Benefits Service Center at 833-862-1490 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Legal Services Plan
Eligible faculty and staff, and their dependents, are entitled to receive certain legal services through this plan at no cost or at discounted rates.
