NC State determines benefits eligibility based on your employment classification and full-time equivalency (FTE) or scheduled weekly hours.

Eligible classifications include:

  • EHRA (Exempt from the Human Resources Act)
    • EPS (Exempt Professional Staff)
    • SAAO (Senior Academic and Administrative Officers)
    • Faculty
  • SHRA (Subject to the Human Resources Act / University Staff)
  • Postdoc (Postdoctoral Scholars)
  • Temporary

General Eligibility

Permanent full-time employees working 30+ hours per week (.75 FTE or greater) on a recurring contract of 9 months or more are generally eligible for the full suite of benefits.

Effective Dates

Most coverage (like Health and NCFlex) begins the first of the month following the hire date.

Plan Year

Most benefit deductibles and spending accounts reset annually on January 1. The plan year for Postdocs and House Officers is July 1-June 30.
