University Guidance Regarding Information Request and Immigration Enforcement
January 30, 2025
The following guidance is being provided to ensure NC State faculty and staff understand how to respond to requests for information from federal and state agents. You may receive requests for information via email, phone calls or in person.
If you are visited by or receive an inquiry for information from a federal or state agent, please refer the agent to the Office of General Counsel (OGC) at 919-515-3071. OGC, with possible assistance from other units, will handle responding to the request or talking to the agent. You may also contact university police at 919-515-3000 so they can verify the credentials of the agent.
The university complies with all federal laws, including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and may require a valid court order or subpoena to release certain information. Do not release any information about students, faculty and staff without first consulting with OGC to ensure we follow university policies, state, and federal laws.
Please distribute this guidance to other faculty and staff, especially those who may be answering phones or serving as points of contact across campus. For those looking for personal support, the university also provides free confidential resources to employees through its Faculty and Staff Assistance Program. Questions on information requests and immigration enforcement should be directed to OGC.
