Bereavement Leave

Bereavement leave allows eligible employees to take paid leave after the loss of immediate family members and colleagues.

Eligibility and Request Process

Eligibility

To qualify for bereavement leave, employees must be:

  • Permanent, probationary or time-limited employees working 20 hours (0.50 FTE) or more per week

9-month faculty, Post Docs, House Officers, Student Workers, and employees who work less than 20 hours (0.50 FTE) are not eligible for bereavement leave.

Leave Provisions

Death of a Family Member

Employees may receive up to 40 hours of paid leave following the death of an immediate family member. Eligible employees can take bereavement leave consecutively or intermittently within 180 days of an immediate family member’s death or notification of their death.  Employees will forfeit any unused leave after 180 days.

  • Note: The amount of the total 40 hours you receive will be prorated to your FTE (Full Time Equivalent)
    • Ex: FTE of 0.75, your standard work week is 30 hours, and you would receive 30 hours of bereavement leave for an immediate family member.

The following are considered immediate family members under this program:

  • Spouse: Husband or wife
  • Parent: Biological, adoptive, step, in-loco parentis* or in-law
  • Child: Biological, adoptive, foster, step, legal ward, in-loco parentis* or in-law
  • Including miscarriage and stillbirth loss
  • Sibling: Biological, adoptive, step, half or in-law
  • Grand and great relatives: Grandparent, grandchild, great-grandparent or great-grandchild, including step and in-law relations
  • Dependents: Anyone living in the employee’s household
  • Domestic partner

*In-loco parentis refers to a person who stands in the place of a parent.

Death of a Colleague

Employees may receive up to eight hours of paid leave to travel to and attend a funeral or memorial event for an NC State colleague.  The colleague must have passed away while employed at NC State or within one year after leaving their job at the university.

Absence Not Covered by Bereavement Leave

In the event you need to be absent following the death of an individual not covered by bereavement leave, you should work with your supervisor and/or department leave coordinator on how best to account for the absence with sick or annual leave.

Supervisor Approval Requirement

Supervisors are responsible for approving their employees’ bereavement leave requests. UHR encourages supervisors to accommodate requests to the extent possible while maintaining business operations.

If you are a supervisor and want to know more about the Bereavement Leave Policy and your role in managing your direct reports requests, please review the FAQs on the OSHR website.

Documentation:

Employees may be required to provide documentation (e.g., obituary) in support of their leave request.
