2025 Spring Ready To Retire Virtual Mini-Workshop Series
University Human Resources is pleased to announce it will host the 2025 spring Ready To Retire Virtual Mini-Workshop Series beginning in late February. The virtual mini-workshop format has been popular among Ready To Retire workshop attendees, and we will again offer various stand-alone retirement planning sessions that you may attend based on your interest. The topics will include Social Security, State Health Plan retiree benefits and Medicare, and the mandatory retirement plans: the UNC Optional Retirement Program (ORP) and the Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System (TSERS). We encourage employees planning to retire within the next few years to attend the workshops, but anyone interested in them is welcome to attend. Each session will be limited to the first 300 people to register.
Social Security and Your Retirement Benefits

The first virtual session is titled “Social Security and Your Retirement Benefits.” Brian Simpson, a North Carolina public affairs specialist for the Social Security Administration, will host the session. You may know Brian from previous Ready To Retire workshops, and we are pleased to have him once again lead this session for NC State. Brian will review eligibility for Social Security benefits, how retirement affects your benefits, qualifications for spousal and survivorship benefits, how to get the most from your Social Security benefits and more.
Unlike our other virtual Ready To Retire mini-workshops, this session wasn’t recorded due to Social Security Administration regulations.
UNC Optional Retirement Program (ORP)

In this session, a speaker and representatives from University Human Resources, TIAA and CAPTRUST will review the ORP, retirement eligibility for ORP, retirement payment options, other income sources and the ORP retirement process. Only those enrolled in ORP should attend this session.
State Health Plan Retiree Benefits and Medicare

A speaker from the State Health Plan will review retiree health plan options and details about using Medicare upon retirement, including enrollment, plan comparisons, Medicare Advantage and more.
Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System (TSERS)
(This session has already occurred.)
In this session, a speaker will review TSERS, the ORBIT platform, retirement eligibility for TSERS, how to estimate your pension benefit, retirement payment options and the TSERS retirement process. Only those enrolled in TSERS should attend this session.
Fall Ready To Retire Workshop
For those who prefer to attend an in-person session, UHR will offer a Ready To Retire half-day workshop in the fall. We will announce registration details for the fall workshop once they are finalized.
