Return From a Leave of Absence
Qualifying Life Event
Employees who discontinue benefits due to a leave of absence must re-enroll in those benefits within 30 days of returning to work if they wish to continue their coverage. Employees enrolled in a NCFlex Health Care Flexible Spending Account before going on leave of absence must re-enroll in their health care flexible spending accounts when they return to work. For assistance during the enrollment process, or to enroll over the phone, call the enrollment help line at 855-859-0966.
Coverage Changes
Employees can only re-enroll in the same benefits they had before their leave of absence. You are not permitted to change or add to your benefits when you return to work.
Nonpayment of Premiums While on Leave Without Pay
If you do not pay your premiums while on leave without pay, you may have a waiting period or be required to meet evidence of insurability when you try to re-enroll in certain benefits (i.e. life insurance).
If your enrollment in the State Health Plan terminated for nonpayment, you will not be allowed to re-enroll in the State Health Plan until the next annual enrollment period.
Annual Enrollment While on Leave of Absence
If you are on an approved leave of absence during annual enrollment, you must complete the enrollment process for any active benefits. This includes completing the tobacco attestation before the deadline. You will have to wait until you return to work to reenroll in any benefits that terminated during your leave of absence.
If you return to work from your leave of absence after the annual enrollment period, you will have the option to enroll in new benefits for the applicable plan year.
Required Documents
If you want to make benefit changes due to a leave of absence, you won’t have to provide documentation to make changes. The validity of the changes you request will be verified based on the leave of absence information in your employee file.
If you need help reenrolling in your benefits due to a leave of absence, call the enrollment helpline at 855-859-0966.
