UNC System Group Term Life Insurance

NC State University offers eligible employees a group term life insurance plan through the UNC System, in partnership with Securian Financial, to help employees and their family members have financial security in the event of a death. The plan offers an added Accidental Dead and Dismemberment (AD&D) benefit for employee coverage, at no cost. See below for plan information, or visit the UNC System website for complete details.

Faculty and staff (non-temp) who work 20 hours per week (.5 FTE) or greater, on a 9 month or greater recurring contract, are eligible to enroll in the this plan. Employees pay full cost for employee coverage in addition to any dependent coverage selected.

Dependent Eligibility

  • Dependent Children are eligible for coverage up to the age of 26.
  • Legal Spouses and Qualified Domestic Partners are eligible for coverage.

Employees must enroll within 30 days of their hire date or within 30 days of a qualified life event. Evidence of Insurability may apply outside of the newly hired initial 30-day eligibility period.

Start of Coverage

Coverage begins the first of the month following your hire/start date or event date.

End of Coverage

Coverage will end on the last day of the month in which your employment ends. For example, if your last day of work is March 20, your coverage would end on March 31. You may be able to continue all or a portion of your insurance through portability or convert to an individual policy.

The UNC System Group Term Life Insurance plan provides coverage for employees, spouse/domestic partners and children. Deductions for this plan are taken on an after tax basis.

Coverage Amounts

  • Employee Voluntary Life: 1-10x your base annual salary
  • Spouse/Domestic Partner Voluntary Life:
    • Option1: $10,000
    • Option 2: Increments of $25,000
  • Child Voluntary Life: $10,000
