Nominate a Colleague for an Award for Excellence

Career Development

If you have colleagues who have gone above and beyond their job responsibilities, University Human Resources encourages you to nominate them for an Award for Excellence.

The nomination deadline is March 1. You can nominate employees from any college or division throughout the university.

“During the past year, employees have taken extraordinary measures to keep the university not only running but meeting its goals and vision to provide students with a top education,” said Britt Hurst, UHR’s wellness and recognition program manager. “We know that exceptional efforts have been made during this very stressful time period, and we encourage the NC State community to nominate employees who are deserving of this recognition.”

An Award for Excellence is the most prestigious honor a nonfaculty employee at NC State can receive. The award recognizes employees for outstanding accomplishments and contributions in seven categories.

Eligible nominees are first considered for department- or division-level awards. Each year, 55 to 60 employees win at those levels. From those winners, a committee will pick 12 universitywide winners who will be finalists for the statewide Governor’s Awards for Excellence.

Each year during the nomination process, employees share wonderful and heartfelt stories about their colleagues, such as an employee scouring a dumpster to help a student find an heirloom ring. Employees also have been recognized for unique ideas, like turning the wooden tops of student desks into cutting boards and selling those boards as a fundraiser.

“I’ve seen people cry when they have received the award,” Hurst said. “Winning the award definitely provides a sense of accomplishment for employees because their peers, their units and the university are recognizing them for the hard work they’ve accomplished that contributes to the university’s mission.”
