Reminder: COVID-19 Voluntary Shared Leave Program Will End Dec. 31

University Human Resources would like to remind employees who have exhausted their current and future leave time that they can request NC State’s COVID-19 Voluntary Shared Leave Bank if they meet certain criteria.

The program was established Aug. 1 and will end Dec. 31, as per the UNC System.

The program allows NC State employees to donate their leave time to other leave-earning NC State employees who have exhausted their accrued leave. As of this month, employees have donated more than 15,000 annual, sick and bonus leave time to the program. We have granted 640 of those hours to eligible employees.

What Reasons Can I Receive Leave Time?

The program is available to employees who need leave time for the following reasons:

  • The employee is needed to provide child care because a child care facility is closed or unavailable due to COVID-19.
  • The employee is needed to provide child care because the employee’s child attends a school that is providing a combination of online and in-person instruction or is only providing online instruction.
  • The employee is needed to provide elder care because an elder care facility is closed or unavailable due to COVID-19.
  • The employee is unable to telework due to the nature of the employee’s job duties.

Who Is Eligible to Receive Leave Time?

You are eligible to receive leave time from the program if you:

  • Are a leave-earning employee. Leave-earning postdoctoral scholars also can receive shared leave.
  • Have been employed for 30 days prior to the first day of a qualifying event.
  • Meet one of the qualifying events
  • Have exhausted all your accrued leave balances, including both current and future leave (sick, annual/compensatory, bonus and special bonus).
  • Have not received disciplinary action for abuse of leave within the last 12 months.

How Many Leave Hours Can I Request?

The maximum amount of shared leave that an employee can request each month is 80 hours. Additional hours may be approved if needed, and the bank has sufficient hours to accommodate the request.

Employee’s requests for hours must be submitted monthly.

Employees can request leave by visiting the shared leave bank webpage and filling out the request form. Please visit the website for additional details about the program, including the request process.
