The death of George Floyd in Minnesota last month has sparked a national dialogue in this country about police brutality and racial inequality. We know that as a result, many of you are interested in engaging with resources related to diversity and inclusion. Here is a list of diversity and inclusion resources at NC State, some currently available and others soon to be implemented.
Sharing and Listening Space and Workshops
NC State’s National Coalition Building Institute team will host an online discussion focusing on recent race-related events that have taken place across the country. The discussion will take place via Zoom from noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, June 25. If you would like to participate, please register. Registrants will be emailed a Zoom link.
In the fall, NCBI plans to host multiple sessions of its Leading Diverse Communities workshop. The workshop teaches participants how to be effective leaders in a diverse world. For more information on that workshop and others, go to the NCBI workshops page.
Cultural Competence Training Program
For NC State faculty, the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity offers a three-part cultural competence certificate program. The Foundations of Cultural Competence and Inclusivity Certificate Program costs $100. The program comprises these components:
- DiversityEdu is an online course that focuses on diversity and inclusive culture.
- The Cultural Intelligence Assessment is an introduction to a cultural intelligence model.
- Building Cultural Competence Knowledge and Skills allows participants to practice skills for engaging in difficult dialogue and creating inclusive environments.
NC State staff can take the DiversityEdu and the Cultural Intelligence Assessment courses.
NC State employees can access an array of videos related to diversity and inclusion through LinkedIn Learning, an online repository of instructional videos and supplemental materials provided to NC State employees for free. Intercultural Development Inventory
During the 2020-21 school year, the Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity plans to pilot a program on campus that is designed to assess participants’ cultural competence.
The Intercultural Development Inventory is a 50-item questionnaire used by schools and organizations across the country. The IDI provides an opportunity for participants to improve their cultural competency, said Stephanie Helms Pickett, associate vice provost for inclusive excellence and strategic practice.
Cultural competence is the ability to successfully interact with people of different backgrounds and recognize differences in people’s experiences. The IDI provides participants with two measures: where they believe they are on the continuum of cultural competence, and where they actually are.
For some people, where they believe they are on the continuum aligns with where they actually are; for others, there is a gap, Pickett said.
“The instrument will give you your two scores, then allow you to reflect upon your results and talk about activities to move your actuality closer to your perception,” Pickett said.
Pickett said her plan for the 2020-21 school year is to identify two departments, units or offices at NC State to take an IDI questionnaire in the fall and identify three others to take it in the spring.
By the end of the summer, eight NC State employees, including two in University Human Resources, will be trained to administer the IDI questionnaire. Those administrators will help Pickett launch the pilot program.
