Marriage
Qualifying Life Event
The legal union to a spouse is generally considered a qualifying life event. If you get married, you’ll have 30 days to request conditional changes to your State Health Plan and NCFlex benefits. That 30-day window starts on the date the marriage occurs.
Effective Dates of Coverage
The effective date for your benefit changes will be the first day of the month following the date of the marriage.
Only certain changes to NCFlex benefit plans are permitted due to marriage. Review the “Marriage” section on this NCFlex table to see which changes are permitted.
Required Documents
If you get married and want to request changes to your benefits, you must provide documentation in support of your request. Acceptable documents include your choice of either a legal marriage certificate and joint tenancy documentation (pg. 3), or page 1 of your 1040 federal income tax return from the previous year.
Important Note: Joint tenancy documentation is not required if you have been married for less than a year. If choosing a 1040 tax return form, it must be from the previous year. If not available, the year prior will be accepted if it is accompanied by a letter from the IRS indicating you have an extension.
